The temperature of the water
When your pet is in the warmth of the water it will help relax their muscles, which in turn can decrease pain and muscle spasm. The range of motion in your pet can often be decreased due to pain, swelling, and/or stiffness. The warmth from the water will ease stiffness in the joints by causing the blood vessels to expand.

Water Pressure
The hydrostatic pressure applied from the water is considered to be a natural anti-inflammatory as it can help towards reducing swelling by causing bodily fluid to move away from the affected area rather than towards it. The reduction in swelling is increased furthermore by exercising the limb to enhance circulation.
Buoyancy
The loading onto weight-bearing joints whilst in the water is significantly decreased as the water is supporting the body, removing the associated impact from walking on dry land. Buoyancy can also provide assistance with balance.
Conditions that are commonly referred for hydrotherapy
